Traditional sources of energy such as oil, gas and coal are not
renewable: they will eventually run out.
They also cause pollution by releasing huge quantities of carbon
dioxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere. Evidence suggests
that these damage the environment in many ways, from acid rain
to stoking up global warming.
The wind and waves are renewable sources of energy and don’t cause
pollution. The energy from waves alone could supply all of mankind’s
electricity needs many times over.

The
challenge of renewable energy has been one of technology and of
economics. It’s about:
|
|
▫ |
developing the technologies that allow us |
|
|
to harness the energy and convert it into |
|
|
electricity; and |
|
▫ |
doing
this at a cost that’s at least equal to |
|
|
or lower
than the cost of generating |
|
|
electricity from non-renewable sources. |
In Scotland,
around 12% of electricity comes from renewable sources. This has to
rise to 18% by 2010 to meet a target that’s been set by the Scottish
Executive, whilst the aspiration is to generate 40% from renewable
sources by 2020.”
At Wavegen we’re developing technologies designed to ensure that wave
energy contributes significantly towards government renewable energy
targets in the UK and internationally.
